Summertime Heat

It is summer time and it is hot outside and dogs get hot just like the rest of us. This time of the year it is critical to remember your dog and keep him cool. If your dog spends time outside he must have shade and enough shade to move around in. He also will need extra water when it is hot so put more than one water dish outside and be sure to keep the dish clean so no bugs or algae grows in it. Take your dog with you in the summer but NEVER leave a dog in the car. Unless you do like Jeff does and lock the dog in the car with the car running and air conditioner on. Is that safe?
I just read some dog article that said dog fur is an insulator and actually keeps cool air near the skin so when you shave your dog in the summer you are making them hotter. Does that make sense? I don’t want to wear a fur coat in the summer. And we shave Beau on the back half year round. I wonder if he gets hotter from that, hmmm something to think about.
We only take Beau on walks in the mornings and evenings during the summer. He just flat refuses to keep going in the afternoon and Jeff doesn’t even think about taking him up Pilot Butte in the summer. Beau really hates to be too hot. And when he gets hot he put his front feet in his water dish and splashes himself and everything around him. He is very pleased with himself when he does it. He can empty his whole water dish in one splash episode if he is really hot. I wonder if a doggie swimming pool would be a good answer.
